The Ball-Sellers house is a rare example of an ordinary person's dwelling of the the 1700s.
John Ball obtained a 166-acre land grant from Lord Fairfax in 1742. A yeoman farmer, he built a one-room log cabin with a loft in what is now Arlington, Virginia. (Exterior, from the southeast.)

Later he added a lean-to and covered the structure with clapboard (cabin pictured at left as seen from Third Street). Amazingly, this primitive cabin survives today. (Exterior, from the northeast.)
