    The Arlington Historical Society (AHS), founded in September 1956, is a non-profit organization incorporated under the laws of Virginia and operated for literary and educational purposes that support research, collection, preservation, discovery, restoration and dissemination of the local history of Arlington County, Virginia.

    Arlington County, Virginia — an urban area of about 26 square miles located directly across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. — was home to American Indian communities for more than 10,000 years and associated with major events in Virginia history for almost 400 years. Arlington is still a county, with no incorporated cities or towns within its boundaries.

    CIVIL WAR DISCOVERY SERIES: CIVIL WAR ARTILLERY
    Sun., July 12, 2009
    2:00 - 3:00 p.m.
    Families, ages 7 and up. Register children and adults. Learn to work as a team to load and aim a replica Civil War cannon. Various artillery pieces used in the Civil War will be discussed and participants will "bombard" a replica fortification. A program of the Arlington County Dept. of Parks & Recreation.     FORT MYER MEIGS PREFAB HOUSE TOUR
    Wed., July 22, 2009
    6:30 p.m.
    The Arlington Historical Society and the Arlington Heritage Alliance are pleased to offer a special tour of a 19th-century prefabricated house at Ft. Myer, designed by Montgomery C. Meigs, Civil War Quartermaster General, engineer, and architect. This is a rare opportunity because of base security issues. The event will begin with light refreshments at the Officers’ Club. Cost is $10 for Society members and $15 for non-members. Payment will be collected the day of the tour. To register, send an email to info@arlingtonhistoricalsociety.org, with "Ft. Myer Tour" in the subject line. Space is limited, so register early.

    The infamous spy and traitor Robert Hanssen worked in secrecy all around the nation's capital for years before being discovered. Some of those clandestine affairs were conducted right in the woods of Long Branch Nature Center. Learn the dramatic story of this notorious spy, the damage he caused our nation, and his eventual downfall and arrest, including the FBI's nature center operations.     Ages 7- 12. A program of the Arlington County Dept. of Parks & Recreation. Most of a soldier's life in the army was spent in camp rather than in battle. In this program, you'll set up camp, learn about the items soldiers carried with them and how they occupied their time. Make and have the opportunity to taste hardtack.     SECOND BULL RUN BATTLEFIELD TOUR

    A program of the Arlington County Dept. of Parks & Recreation. Following their succesful defense of Richmond, the Confederate Army moved to attack a Union army near Washington.
